BULLET
The small, short-haired mutt sniffed the air. It didn't seem like the place was exactly bustling and... She looked behind her, at the large, looming figure of a rather sulky Wolfhound staring at her stubbornly from the shadows. She made a motion, calling her friend out from his hiding place, but the much bigger dog simply hunched down low and dug his claws into the dirt stubbornly.
"Heathen!" She ran back to the wolfhound, who simply looked down at her with a scornful frown. "I told you. Joining the rogue pack is the only way. With all the stuff that's about to happen, we don't want to be caught out in the open."
"I'm a loner," Heathen said. "You're a loner. It's ridiculous for loners to join a pack."
Bullet shook her head, "Frankly, sweetie, I'm sick of being a loner. I mean, you're a great intimidating dog and all but you're lazy - you just sit around all day and the only time you lift a paw is when those damned voices tell you to. I'm not quite as brutish as you - I need the protection and security of a pack with a territory of their own, a place for my to rest my head every night, and having to move ahead every time someone else claims the piece of land you're resting on is not something that promotes protection and security."
HEATHEN
She is correct.[/b] the Voice said. She has done many things for you. You should try and protect her.
But Heathen had never asked for Bullet to do things for him. Her busybody nature, more than any form of real compassion, is what makes her do things for others. She always wants to give that impression of doing things out of the goodness of her heart, but the truth was she just liked having other dogs indebted to her. She liked to make favours and cash in those favours later on when the situation suited her. She was just as selfish as he was, only she was less quiet about it.
But you can't deny she's done a lot for you, no matter what her reasons were, the Voice said.
It was being very compassionate today, though Heathen had no clue why. It didn't really matter, though, because he had no choice - if the voice was compassionate, then Heathen was compassionate. It was just how things worked.
"Fine, we'll join," the wolfhound said. "But I still think it's ridiculous to unite a bunch of dogs who consider themselves to be alone."
"Whatever, sweetie," the older female snorted as she moved forward. Heathen gingerly stepped out from the shadows and moved up beside her, sighing.
