It was the break of dawn, couldn't hardly be considered day yet. It was also hot, muggy, and not nearly as bad as it was going to get later. A sigh escaped from the spaniel's lips. She missed zero humidity. Water wasn't supposed to be in the air. It just seemed wrong. There were a lot of things the dog missed about her former home. The annoying crow of roosters at 2:00 am, the mooing of a hundred cows. Mel sighed again. Different was not always worse, she reminded herself as she walked out of the abandoned gas station she slept in.
Mel yawned and stretched. Her eyes were still hooded with sleep, but she insisted on waking at sunrise. She liked to watch the sun come up. That was one of the reasons she had chosen such an empty terra, so there were no buildings to block her view. So she was fickle. It was a good choice either way, there was plenty of prey coming from the forest, and a few skinny rats that came from the city.
There was only her and Balder in the pack, but she decided it was best to keep food stocked anyway. The spaniel trotted off in the direction of the forest, the best hunting was there. She imagined taking down a deer, implausible by herself, but still nice to dream.

Balder swiped his tongue over the dark gray fur of his shoulder in harsh, fast strokes. The humidity in the air made his coat somewhat frizzy. Appearance was important to the male - he wanted to look his best at all times. He had a very pretty Alphess to impress; a springer spaniel by the epithet Mel. She would certainly be up and about the abandoned gas station she called home.
He paused on the way over to catch his reflection in a lingering puddle. The elkhound passed his tongue over the pads of his right forepaw and proceeded to smooth out the fur on top of his head. The process was repeated several times before Balder was satisfied with his smart appearance.
Mel was already awake, just as he predicted, and trotting off into the forest that made up a better part of the territory. Balder picked up his pace.
"Good Mornin' ma'am!" The male chittered at his Alphess. "How 'bout this weather, mm? Much too balmy if you ask me."
He fell into her gait just off her right flank. He smiled his suave, charming smile and fluffed his chest fur out a little. Not that she would see, but still. "Where are we headed to today, my Alphess? Not that I wouldn't follow you loyally to the ends of the earth - curiosity has the better of my tongue."

Mel grinned at the hunter "Mornin' Balder!" she said pace slowing "Yeah." she nodded, somewhat absent-mindedly. The asphalt ended, giving relief to her dry cracked paws. 'Spending so much time on concrete doesn't do anyone any good' she thought, padding slowly through the much softer earth. The spaniel smiled.
"Nn, what?" she hadn't really been listening to Balder "Oh, right. I'm going to go hunt in the forest. I take it you'd like to come with?" Birds sang in the distance, only making Mel hungrier. The forest wasn't very far away from Mel's gas station, she walked just a bit faster.
