The Golden Retriever known as Jiro was slowly walking his way down into the middle of what was once the humans city. It belonged to no one now tho, it being too run down and covered with cracks and holes everywhere. It was as if a war raged on and this was all that was left, ruins. He didn't mind tho, since none would claim this place, it means he didn't have to worry about others wanting to kick him out. He would put his nose to the ground and sniff around to see if anyone else has already been here before he has, but mostly only found dust that made him sneeze.
He snorts to the Dust and moves deeper into the city, looking for a place to call his home for now. He would explore till he found an old abandoned Hospital. He snorts again and figured that it would do for now, so would slowly walk on his way up to it. It was broken and crumbled with most of it having collapsed down onto itself, leaving the first few floors destroyed, but some of the floors were still intact. Perfect. He would surround the building and try to find all the entrances into it, as well as any good hiding places. You never know when you'll need them.
After finding as much as he could outside he would soon go inside. Finding only two entrances so far, one being to jump from the other building near it, or the way he was going which was a side of the wall having been destroyed and pushed off to now lean against the building. It looked more like a ramp going up into it, showing two of the floors the one he was going on, and half the one above it. the other half concealed by the part of the wall that was still there. As he made his way inside, he tried to go both up and down the place, to explore every bit of it, every hole, every possible place someone or something could have been hiding or be used to hide in, in case of trouble. Then he would find the farthest most up floor he could go to and would make it his for now. This was his home now, and he wanted to be left alone from anyone else that came here looking for a home.

"Ugh, living in such a big city will be the death of me!" An elderly corgi flopped down in the cool shade of an abandoned building. She cursed under her breath the short legs and stout build of her species. "And you had to walk all the way up the damn ramp just to get inside. Why? 'Cause you're crazy, you old bat."
She looked over the building she had stumbled upon. It was - at one point - prestigiously clean and glittering white. Now time and nature had took hold of the building and dulled its luster. The floors below her had collapsed upon themselves. Safira looked up at the floors that remained intact. They faded into a gray, with dark ceilings. A chill grasped the small dog. This place is not a place of good tiding or merryment. She scented the building, surprised to find the fresh scent of another dog present. Who in their right mind would pick a place like this to inhabit?
"Ho, you're in for it now, old bird, wandering into some other dog's territory." Saf willed herself to move, but found her limbs too exhausted to obey. "Ah well, I'll just have to think of something to say to plea my case. You done it now, ol' coot."

Jiro was not a fighter. He was more of the silent type. He clings to the shadows, liking to stay hidden and away from others, like now. He knew a female has stumbled into his home, but he didn't go out and challange her like a normal wolf male would. He would watch her from afar, staying in the darkness and far away enough to not be seen but to be able to hear her. He was able to hear some of what she said, but most of it he didn't get as he really wasn't paying attention. He just wanted to be alone, and prove it by saying out from the shadows. "Leave me alone..." loud enough for her to hear, but hopefully not enough to give away where he was hiding. He watches her still to see what she does, not liking when others are around, they cause trouble and only want to hurt. Atleast thats what his experience with people taught him.

She'd been wandering through the Inner City, searching for some life in this town, when Coda's mismatched ears perked up at the sound of another voice. It sounded close by, but when she looked around there didn't seem to be anyone out in the open - which either meant that some dog had figured out the trick of invisibility, or he was hiding. It sounded like it was coming from a building and, always a curious pup even when she was no longer really a pup these days, Coda trotted inside. She saw Safira, the Corgi she'd meant upon first entering the city, and her tail waved happily at the site.
"I heard something," Coda said to the smaller dog, in passing. "I'm going to go investigate."
It seemed that becoming the Alpha of a new pack had instilled a new courage in the Australian Shepherd. Had she not had a place to go to in order to lick any wounds she might develop in a fight with a strange dog, Coda doubted she'd be galloping headlong towards a strange voice in a strange building that, though it'd been too muffled to hear the actual words, she was sure didn't sound too welcoming to Saf.
It didn't take her long to figure out a general area where the other dog must be. She couldn't pinpoint it exactly, because there were numerous things he could hide under and he didn't seem to want to come out and make things easier for her, but Coda settled with sitting in the centre of the vague location she could smell the scent of another dog and talking to thin air.
"Hi, I'm Coda," she said giddily. This would be her second meeting with another canine since she'd arrived, and she was absolutely thrilled. "I'm the Alpha of the Rowan Pack," and she really loved saying that, "and I welcome you to the City Without Man... Well, that's not exactly what it's called, but it's pretty dramatic sounding, right? It sounds just like something the old wandering troubadour dogs in some of the cities I used to go to would call this place... And, you know, I'm pretty new here myself so I shouldn't exactly be welcoming you, but I figure it's the hospitable thing to do so I'm doing it. As an Alpha, I need to act with honour and dignity and... Oh, this rambling isn't very dignified, is it?"
Coda hunched down, trying to pear under various things - some wooden beams, a hole in the wall, a blue-grey tarp - in order to figure out where the other dog was.
"It'd be easier to get my thoughts together if you'd come out, you know. I can think more clearly when I'm looking a dog in the eye, and this talking to dust particles is making me feel silly."

The red colored Golden Retriever known as Jiro was not hiding under anything, nor was he hiding inside of anything. He was actually on the stairs leading up to the second floor, but the stairs was around the corner from the entrance, so he was still hidden from site. He listens to her, frowning slightly as the "happy go lucky" canine ventured into the dark and gloomy hospital.
He would never understand why people came here that were like them. They could be happy, they had homes, they didn't need to hide away from others like he does. "I do not need to be welcomed. I am already here." he says back to her, his voice sounding loudest in the back of the entrance where the stairs were, but it also bounced off the walls to sound like it came from many places at once.
Jiro sighs and says shortly after wards. "If your truly an Alpha of someplace, than you should not be here. You should be in the safety of your home, away from the world of others and care only for yourself, your pack, and no one else that is outside it." It sounded cruel and mean, but it was a sad truth that he lived by, to stay away from others, and care for none other than himself. It was how he has survived for so long, and it was why he came here seeking what he hoped had been the most horrible place someone would go to so none would come here.

Coda's ears perked up at the sound of a voice nearby, and she could now pinpoint exactly where the other dog was. The staircase. She was close, at least - she'd been looking at level ground in the corner by the stairs, but she'd been way off in talking to the random debris. She felt kind of silly now, but she hid it well - immediately springing up and looking in the direction the voice had come.
"Oh, I don't really have a pack yet - just the land, you know... You're only the second dog I've met since I arrived. I doubt anyone is really pressed for space around here - we could probably all get our own land but... You do realize that you're hiding in neutral territory, right? That people can come by here whenever they want, without your permission? If I were you and I wanted to hide - which is ridiculous, really, because what kind of life is it if you spend all your time alone, doing nothing? - I would either find a pack to join, or find territory to make a pack of your own. Those are really the only ways you can control where dogs go and what they do."

Jiro was right around the corner, I mean right around it not even 2 feet away If Coda were to pounce around the corner she would pounce right onto Jiro even. But she didn't do that. Jiro snorted some to her, saying "But you have to defend your territories, or while your away someone can come and take it away from you. While your here, wasting your time with a low life like me, someone else could be trying to take your territory away from you." which was the truth, territories are too much trouble. You have to defend them, you have to clean them, you have to share with friends and family. Atleast here in neutral territory no one can take it away from him for no one can claim it. He didn't have to worry about defending, just have to find the deepest darkest most gloomy place to hide, but seems the first spot he picked was not such a good spot after all.
"You should go back to your.... territory.... and stay out of neutral places. After all, if you were found here by someone who disliked you, there is nothing to stop them from hurting you." which was also true, for neutral places are usually where you find the strays that are by far the cruelest and most evilest of all for no clan would take them. But also there are the weak and hopeless like Jiro, that hide out away from everyone else and keep to themselves.

"Like I said, there's so much territory up for the taking it would be illogical to try and steal some away from an already-established pack. When more dogs begin to populate the city, I'll worry about my territory - until then, I'll take the chances."
She adjusted her posture and lifted her hind leg to scratch behind her ear - her spotted ear. Coda had all the appearance of an unimpressed canine - completely open, fearless, and though she wasn't bored, exactly, because she enjoyed speaking with other dogs, she wasn't really excited or on the alert, either. She simply looked as if she liked this conversation she was having, almost as if she was speaking to someone she was well acquainted to rather than a complete stranger. Coda just had that sort of personality of treating everyone she met with an excited happiness.
"Besides," she said, "there's no one at my territory. Why would I want to sit there all day, staring at pavement? I have to recruit for my pack, and the best way to do that is by going out and finding loners, and the best way to find loners is on neutral territory... And I don't really agree with you on the personality of a loner - I was a loner until a few days ago, and do I either look bloodthirsty or look like I'd attack anyone without reason? No. And neither does Safira, over there, or any other lone dog I've met... The ones you have to watch out for are the ones in a pack, because they get overly territorial and are sensitive to anything that could possibly be a threat to them."

He would let out a soft little sigh, or would have been soft if not for the fact that it was bouncing off all the walls and sounding louder. "Yes, but no everyone likes just anyplace. What if someone like yours better than the others, they will take it while your away. And what is to stop them from taking yours aswell as having their own, to make their territory even bigger than it is now." Then snorts slightly. "You think just those who are over sensitive about their territory are what you have to look out for? then you have never been in the while where it's the strongest survive and the weak die. You probly always being protected by your parents and friends, you have never had someone try to kill you and show you how weak you really are"
He sounded very small and weak for one that was actually quite strong and big, he was just too afraid and too ashamed to use his strength. He turns away to look at the stairs, saying over his shoulder in her direction. "You have a home, you should go to it... Your too happy and nice for this place... this place is not ment for you" Then his foot steps could be heard as he walks up to the upper floor, thinking Coda would probly and hopefully leave this place and go back to her home, but mostly cause he was tired and didn't want to be around people anymore, they always hurt him and tease him for being so weak and different.

Coda followed after the other dog, thoroughly insulted. She bounded up the stairs, her Australian Shepherd nature making her quick and agile as she was propelled by anger. Once at the top of the staircase, she spun around to face the other canine, her face finally contorted into something more than cheerful graciousness.
"Just because I don't act like a brooding fool like you do, doesn't mean I've had a life of splendour," she snapped. "I'll have you know that I never had a home. My mother and I began travelling as soon as I was able to walk, and we never stopped - not once. My paws were bloodied and broken before we reached a place safe enough to rest, and it wasn't until we heard of this place that we actually had a destination to work towards. Everything else was just walking, and hunting, and fighting, and searching."
She looked down in her recollection, staring at her paws - one speckled tan-on-brown and the other solid chocolate.
"We were so far away, though, that it's a sheer wonder how we got word of this city at all. That didn't stop my mother - she wanted a place to stay, safe from the humans because..." Coda stuttered a bit in her story, "Well, I don't know why she hated humans so much. They were loud and filthy and greedy, yes, but she really hated them... I always thought it had something to do with my father, like maybe he was killed by one or something but... But she never told me."
The Aussie's mismatched eyes flashed back to the Retriever's form, "She never got a chance to tell me, either, because on the way here I lost her. It was months ago, and I waited for what felt like forever and even after I kept moving to the City I waited outside the gates for her, because she was the only family I had. She wasn't doting, and she told me the only way to make it in this world was to be strong - never once did she coddle me or protect me from the harshness of anything. I toughed it all out, just like you did, but I'm not like you because I saw the chances hidden between the hardships and I didn't dwell on all the bad things. To grow you have to acknowledge a barrier between yourself and your goals, and you have to change yourself to fit with the new situation."
"So maybe," she growled, "instead of hiding away in a damn dank building you should learn from your past and pick yourself up and pull yourself together. Right now you're little more than a coward, a pitiful drowned rat where a real dog should be standing. Stop saying to people, and do. Stop telling about what ifs and whining - because your very look is whining, physically whining and I don't even know you but I'm already sick of it."

Jiro would turn to look at her as she came running up, yelling about how sad of a story her life was. He snorts and growls back to her, saying "Atleast you had a mother that loved you till now! My mother hated me for what I am! I have been bullied, harassed, kicked on, even came near death a few times! All because of my mother!" he growls back more. "I do not know who my father way, for my mother slept with any male she could find and it could be any one of them. I wasn't spose to be born, but I was and she was forced to raise me, what a horrible job she did too, always hitting and biting, blaming everything on me. Till one day even before my first year of living she kicked me out and I had to defend myself since then."
He would turn away from her, growling more still. "You don't know what it's like when everyone hates you for no reason other than that they can hate you. You don't know what it's like being alone for as long as I have. I am not weak, I chose to live this way, why should I live any other way? even you who have not met me before already hate me." He snorts before starting to walk away, this being the highest floor since the stairs were blocked so one can't go any higher. He would just go to the last room, farthest from where she was. "It's my punishment for being alive. Everyone hates me and attacks me, but I won't fight back. As long as I hide, no one needs to be angry at me..." that was his logic, for him none knew of him, now could get made at him. He knew she could follow after him, but he didn't care, why should he care?

Beneath tawny feet, daintily built with nubs of claws dulled by pavement a fire-escape supported the light figure. She was thin and willowy, jumping from step to step without hardly making a sound. She could hear faint voiced tinged with agitation coming out of the window she was now almost below. With one last heave the mutt hauled herself onto the landing and peered curiously over the window sill.
Her deep brown eyes peeked over the ledge, watching a pretty aussie and an unhappy retriever bicker. She smiled slyly, wondering if they were mates. "N'aww," she said softly "They're so cute together." Nymph did something of a 'squee' face as she watched them have at it. Suddenly her metal legband found itself caught between two rungs of the fire escape. The borderluki struggled to free herself, making quite a lot of noise in the process and attracting the attention of a few amused strays on the street bellow. Inwardly 'Oh no-ing' she continued to pull, the ruckuss only adding to her rising panic. 'My feetz is stuck.' she thought sadly, yanking half-heartedly as she realized how easily and quietly she could have slipped it out.
Nymph slowly raised her head back over the ledge to peek into the glassless window frame.

"I didn't hate you!" Coda shouted. Her patience - as ever-present as it was - was wearing thin with this one. "I came to you as a friend, welcoming you to the community and what do you do? You complain about everything that's gone wrong in your awful, awful life - as if you're the only one who's had it hard! Honestly, you are the most selfish, inconsiderate, and... idiotic dog I have ever met and believe me, I have met a lot of abhorrent canines in my short life. It's no damn wonder everyone hates you - you do all you can to make them hate you, all the while putting yourself up on a lonely pedestal as the constant victim!"
Her eyes narrowed so as to cover the top half of brown in her right one and give her the look of even, heterochromatic oculars: one blue, one brown.
"Try a little introspection once in a while," Coda said, voice low with scorn, "and I don't mean the self-pitying kind. I mean, look at yourself and recognise what you're doing with all this sulking about in dark corners - you're hurting yourself more than any other dog's ever hurt you. This is a new place, and you're nothing special - you are not the town pariah, and you're not the awful monster you say your mother thought you were. Not here. This is a new start, a new beginning, so stop thinking about what's happened in the past because that doesn't exist anymore. It's gone, it's done, stop going back over and over in your head and visiting a place you hate so much. Think about today. Think about tomorrow..."
She glared at the other pointedly, claws scraping at the thick dust coating the floor beneath her paws. The fur on her neck was bristled in her anger, the scruff standing straight up and framing her head a short, spiky lion's mane.
"These are the only things that matter: not what's been, but what's to come."
The Australian Shepherd gave the retriever one last snort of derision before turning to jump back down the stairs, but was stopped by the sound of a clattering nearby. She turned, searching for the source of the noise and seeing another dog - this one dark, black and brown, peaking over the window sill from the fire escape outside.
Coda made a bee-line for the window, as she'd never really seen a fire escape and so was curious to see what this other canine was standing on. She reached the window and cautiously stuck her head over the ledge, fascinated by the ongoing pattern of stairs and metal-mesh grates that covered the building she was in as well as the ones in the distance. It did its job to take her mind off the verbal war between her and the sulky retriever, and Coda had a sudden inspirational desire to go around climbing fire escapes.
She blinked, then turned to the newcomer dog, having forgotten that she was the reason Coda had moved at all.
"Sorry," the Aussie said distractedly. "Are you alright?"

Nymph gave a wolfish grin "Sure, hun. I'm fine," she glanced over at Jiro, waggling her eyeridge spots suggestively "What have we here?" she asked the flustered aussie in a lower voice. Her eyes continued to flick between the two.
Putting two paws on the ledge she hoisted herself gracefully into the room. She looked around. It was as rundown and unimpressive as most buildings. It smelled faintly familiar. The long-burned out rectangular lighting above them was just as unsettling. "I hate this kind of place." she said soberly, dull claws scraping circles on the dusty tiles. The border collie mix had spent a fair amount of her life bellow the cold light of buildings something like this one.
Suddenly the fae brightened. "I'm Nymph, by the way," she looked at the two dogs "What are you two cuties called?" She had a crooked grin and half-closed eyes, which she held that way most of the time. The shiny studs in her ears gleamed in the dusty sunbeams she stood under.

Jiro snorts to Coda, thinking some before saying back to her. "But it's the only way I know how to live. If you want me to change so much, then stay and help me change." he saids, still sounding bitter and mean but as he says it was the only way he knew how to live. He didn't have many happy events in his life, so didn't know how to be happy much. He only knew how to run and hide, and as coda found out how to blame himself and how to whine.
Then he too saw the other at the window and snorts again, shaking his head. "Dogs are popping up everywhere...." but he didn't leave. in truth he wanted to change, but didn't know how. If Coda can help, well... he will give it a try he guess. Which would mean not running away from her, or running when someone else comes around when he is with her.
