The full moon rose slowly over the gentle sea, her great white reflection pooling on the liquid surface. The ocean lapped gently against the stone walls of the grotto, producing a constant dull roar. Faint clicks disturbed the stone as a short, long-bodied dog padded along the top of the ridge. Just below her paws was a massive citadel of caves, carved out over time by the relentless beating of the ocean's saline waters. Alas, the corgi was past her prime and could no longer manage the climb down to access the splendorous caves.
Tonight, she would remain on the cliff-top, in prefect view of the night sky. Saphira tipped her head back. The stars burned brightly in the navy blue heavens. They had become so much clearer since the fall of the humans. To any other dog, they may just be random spots of light, but not to the gypsy. The future was mapped upon them like the words of a book: predictions of argument, deceit, births. She loved astrology.
Safira let out a murmur of laughter. The signs only she could see were very peculiar tonight. "My, my, my little balls of light. I certainly hope what you tell me isn't true. It would be most unfortunate for some certain dogs I know."

Two dark eyes watched the sea curl over itself. It is a selfish creature she decided. As the sea only loved itself, crashing and battering everything around it, but harmlessly sliding around in it's pooled depths. The breeze, however, was merely confused. Most days it cooled the skin of wanderers, gentle and serene. However, once thrown into a rage it became screaming tempests that punished the landscape angrily. The earth was silent, still, thoughtful, but genuinely different wherever one happened to step. Sometimes it grumbled sleepily, and other times it shook itself awake with such force it sent things flying from where they stood. But the stars? What did they know? Who were they? Glimmering gems shrouded in mystery and wonder.
Click, click, click a steady rhythm was being tapped out onto the stone somewhere behind her. Nymph turned from were she balanced precariously on the cliff's edge to see who had come. She was sitting looking up at the sky, talking to herself. She strained to make out what the corgi said. Her eyes widened slightly at what she thought she had heard, and turned to face the heavens again. Nothing. Curious now, she edged a bit closer to the older dog, she sniffed the air delicately and continued to shift closer. Once she was within the range of hearing Nymph spoke up "Do they say anything about me?" she asked in a wondrous tone, softly padding closer to sit beside Safira.
Her dark eyes were questioning, this little dog was so strange. Nymph was thoroughly intrigued by her bangles and other accessories, she herself had round silver studs adorning her ears, and a band etched with painful memories clinging to her leg, a reminder for always of how cruel the world was. She wanted badly to know what happened next, and perhaps this bizarre creature held the answer. Nymph normally wasn't superstitious, and didn't have much faith in anything besides herself. But why not give it a try? It wouldn't hurt, at least.

"Do they say anything about me?" The gypsy cocked her head slightly to the side. A beautiful black, tan, and white dog padded up to her. It seemed she was not alone in the grotto on this pleasant summer's night. The corgi gave a foxy smile and gazed back at the stars.
"The Pisces moon and the Cancer sun bring about memories of the past, tempting us to live there while the present whisks by. The sun in the house of Pluto spells great discomfort and mercury's relation to Chiro summons for a loss of identity. That is all the more specific I can get for you, my sweet. Unless you told me under which sun you were born."
And I receive payment for my effort. The corgi passed her sapphire eyes over the black female, reading her for discomfort on unease. Not all dogs liked what was told to them in a reading, and Safira could never lie about the stars. She hoped tonight would not make her a target for violence.

Nymph wasn't really sure what any of those names meant, having very little interest in astrology "Um... Capricorn?" she said rather uncertainly. She was irritated by this corgi's superior knowledge on the subject, and didn't want to look stupid. She turned away eyes wandering along the rocky cliffs, vaguely wondering what the hell was the deal with the little dog wearing a bandana on her head. 'How did she even get it there?' Nymph thought skeptically, but decided it wasn't worth the effort of worrying over.
"The Pisces moon and the Cancer sun bring about memories of the past, tempting us to live there while the present whisks by." "Ain't that the truth," muttered the cynical mutt in a barely audible voice, having much difficulty letting go of the torments of the past. Nymph sighed. The stars were bright here. Without light or air pollution to dim their glow, she thought it must make the horoscope sh*t easier. But still, the only constellation she could make out was the big dipper, which someone had pointed out to her somewhere along the line.

"Um... Capricorn?" The female beside her seemed unsure.
"The winter moon, huh? Right when the leaves get bare. Right now the house of Virgo is ruling, causing us to look to our home and family values. Capricorn, Capricorn." The corgi scoured the black curtain for the sea-goat constellation. "You're in the same vicinity as Leo, you might want to watch out for jealousy among the other dogs. From there, it seems, it gets better as you drift away from boisterous and self-conscious Leo."
Saf grimaced as a slow, dull ache appeared at the base of her neck. She lowered her head and moved it from side to side a little. You're getting a little too old to stare up for long, now, aren't you, old bat? Another gust of wind rolled off the sea, bringing with it scents of brine. The slow gears of the aging dog's mind brought something to light. "We haven't introduced ourselves formally, I don't think. I am Safira, but better known as Saf."
Saf started at the other female from the corner of her eye, liquid sapphires boring into her fur and trying to make conclusions. It was hard - trying to discern her personality and not stereotype at the same time. The corgi twitched a fly off her ear, making her bangles clatter.
"Lovely night for star gazing, hm?"

Confused, Nymph forced a smile and said "Safira? That's a nice name. Mine is Nymph." her features faded into a more neutral frown as she pondered the meaning of Safira's words. Why would anyone possibly be jealous of her? Suppressing a dry snort she looked back at the corgi. "What...? Oh, yeah." The cluttered smattering of glowing white dots were meaningless and dizzying. A shooting star blazed across the sky, sprinkling Nymph's imagination with stardust. She had once heard someone say that 'everything is made of stardust,' but had quickly decided that it couldn't possibly be true. The difference between any two objects seemed entirely too great.
Nymph yawned, thin muzzle stretching so wide her eyes were forced closed. The image of stars was burned on her retinas, glowing blue and pink on her eyelids. She blinked several times, trying to get rid of the spots. "So what brings you to the city, Safira?" she asked, not feeling entirely comfortable in calling her Saf. Nymph had never really been into nicknames herself. What would mine be? she wondered. Nym? Phee? Nymphie? she giggled inwardly and the ridiculousness of the possible nicknames.
