Night blanket the ruined city. It's air was still thick with the warmth of the sun, though the body had long since settled below the horizon. The fallen buildings and toppled fixtures, normally standing out as dark silhouettes, blended softly into the background as shadows.
One figure sat upon a piece of up heaved pavement. The moon behind her crisped her figure into handsome, dark outlines. The large gray female fixed her gaze upon the milky way. The band of stars stretched far across the ceiling of the earth, spreading light in a soft, dappled hue. The full moon sat cradled between the branches of two distant oaks, far off in the forest. What wonders those heavens held. Where did those glowing orbs come from, anyway? What gave them their light?
All the reason she came to this place every time she got the urge to explore a train of deep thought. It was quiet here - for the most part. The elk hound still had to tolerate the occasionally giggles of feral dogs slipping away into the privacy of the apartment building to procreate. She gave a disdained snort. What was love? Just another sexual attraction to the opposite sex for the purpose of bearing young? How idiotic.
A breath of wind pushed past the dog and threw the apartment doors around on their hinges. She growled as she picked up the scent of another dog on the wind. A male, too; how horribly predictable. The elk hound rose to her full height.
"I know you're there!" Thora barked. "If you're going to hide, hide down wind, dumbass!"

The full moon was low in the sky, covering the earth in shadows. Summer heat still hung in the air. There was a tall structure jutting out of the ground in the distance. A male dog padded around the piles of rubble that used to be human buildings. The moon shining on his dark grey back. He paused and yawned. Why did I have to come all the way out here? I should of stayed in my den. Usually, he didn’t travel too far from his home. But for some reason something drove him to explore. He continued walking.
He arrived near base of the structure. He could point out that it was a human building, an apartment. He was surprised that it still stood. Plants were starting to grow up the walls. A giggle came out from one of the broken windows.
He pulled his ears back and gave a frustrated sigh, “Great, I stumbled into a mating area, that is just the peak of my day.” I don’t need to run into something I don’t need to see, He never felt love, never felt that he will. He didn’t care. He enjoyed living alone, no one to give you shit, nag you, but still….
There was a gust of wind that made his dog tags give a faint metal trickle sound. His ear twitched at the doors slamming. He was getting ready to go again.
"I know you're there! If you're going to hide, hide down wind, dumbass!" barked a slightly familiar voice.
He growled, “Who’s hiding!? I am right here!” he barked back.
An elk hound jumped down from a slab of pavement that jutted up. He caught a scent, the dog was obviously a female. He hunched his shoulders and bared his teeth, his tail swaying behind him.

“Who’s hiding!? I'm right here!” The male barked back.
Thora jumped down from her perch and stalked closer to the dog. There was something somewhat familiar about him, though the elk hound couldn't put her paw on it right away. His teeth were bared and his hackles raised. The female raised her own hackles, not eager to fight but there was no way she was going to back down. A sudden flash of light reflected from the males chest as a dog tag span to face the moon. A gear clicked.
"Is that you, house-pet?" She said with disbelief. Her mouth cracked into a smile. "So you actually left your two-legs' house? What, did you run out of kibble?"
Despite her harsh words, a small part of the elk hound was happy to see him again. She trotted up to him and gazed up at his odd-colored eyes though lowered lids, a pleased smirk on her lips.

"Is that you, house-pet?" said the female. He knew her voice, but he couldn't point it out. House-pet. House-pet.... Then it clicked, "Thora?" he whispered to himself. "So you actually left your two-legs' house? What, did you run out of kibble?" he pulled his ears back and sighed. Defiantly Thora. She slowly padded toward him with a smirk on her face, gazing up in his eyes.
“Nice to see you too,” he replied, thick with forced sarcasm. To him, it actually was nice to see her, the only female that made his face burn and made his heart beat faster. Even though she treated him like the dirt under her feet. It was just something about her….
“So, how’s life been treating ya?” he said, after she was sitting next to her.

"Nice to see you too," His voice was thick with sarcasm. Thora gave an amused snort. "So, how's life been treating ya?"
The elk hound sat back on her haunches in a graceful motion. "We're equals now." She wasn't even sure if he remembered that joke. "I'm the alphess of my own land now - The Cracked? Maybe a shred of gossip has leaked into the walls of your house. It's nothing impressive at the moment, but we'll get there.
Her voice rose a half-octave and was fringed with a hint of laughter. "Hey, you still wear those?" She pawed that the dog tags around Elam's neck. Thora felt uncomfortable being this close to him... but it wasn't a bad uncomfortable. It was like she was nervous about something; the kind of nerves that make one a little jumpy and hysterical. He smelled nice, though. Warm and soft and comforting. The male's tags twirled around under her claws, throwing the moonlight. The female smiled - not a smirk or smug grimace - a true, genuine smile.

"We're equals now." He gave a short, quiet laugh, "I'm the alphess of my own land now - The Cracked? Maybe a shred of gossip has leaked into the walls of your house. It's nothing impressive at the moment, but we'll get there."
Elam gave a unbelieving look, Thora leading a pack? Heh, talk about leading with an iron fist.
"Hey, you still wear those?" she laughed, her voice an octave higher. She fiddled with his dog tags that hung from his neck. He stiffened. Suddenly the back of his neck got hot, her sweet sent got stronger, almost intoxicating. He was now nervous. Almost uncomfortable. His heart beat was faster, like the first time his muzzle brushed hers. He stared in her deep, brown eyes that shined under the moonlight. A smile flashed across her muzzle, a smile that he had never seen before. It made his tail wag behind him.
He let out a nervous laugh, "Yeah, they grew on me, ya know?" he shifted his gaze to the collar around her neck, the spikes glowing under the moon's glow. "and I see you still have your little accessories" he said while nudging the band around Thora's right front leg with his paw, "nice to see you haven't changed that much," he looked back into her eyes, flashing a smile of his own.

"Yeah, they grew on me, y'know? And I see you still have your little accessories." Elam pawed at the studded bracelet around her right forepaw.
It was kind of odd for the elk hound to be in the presence of another dog and not fighting, let alone touching each other without the intent to draw blood. That strange feeling wouldn't go away either. Thora's heart fluttered in her rib cage. Maybe the butterflies that invaded her stomach had found their way up.
"Nice to see you haven't changed that much." He looked back at her and smiled.
Thora threw her head back and barked a quick laugh. "You think a way to a bitch's heart is to tell her she looks exactly the same? Where's the compliment in that?"
The female moved the slightest measurable distance closer to Elam. The strange symptoms only got a little more severe. The insects in her heart and stomach started fliping upon themselves. So it was the handsome male making her feel so strange.
But it felt good.
She scooted a small distance toward the male again and reached out slowly to press the end of her muzzle against his. Her tail wagged furiously across her behind. Heat swelled up to her cheeks, warm against the cool night air.
"Uh," she fought for a reason to approach him as such "this is how old friends greet each other, right? They touch noses?" They were touching just a little more than noses together, but she hoped the gray dog wouldn't notice.

"You think a way to a bitch's heart is to tell her she looks exactly the same? Where's the compliment in that?" Elam closed his eyes and gave a laugh, at least I didn't say she was looking older, I don't think normal females like that.
One of the suds on Thora's collar brushed against his chest, making his muscles tense up again. He dug his claws into the ground to fight the uneasiness of his stomach. Elam's heart battered against his ribcage, beating so loud he was afraid the beautiful female would hear. It felt strange to be so close with a female. The only time he was this close to a dog was when his jaw was tight around another's flesh, but this was nothing like it; the beating of his heart was not due to the adrenaline of a brawl, but the feeling of...love? Was this what love felt like?
Suddenly her warm, moist nose was against his. More heat ran across his muzzle and neck, like fire running along his body. His tail battered the ground behind him.
"Uh," she paused, "this is how old friends greet each other, right? They touch noses?" Usually, he would of laughed at this. Greeting each other by brushing muzzles? Who would think that? But nothing came out. He was silent, unknowing what to say. Like her presence was like venom, paralyzing him.
He gave a slight nod, "Yeah," he said quietly, "Yeah, yeah" his voice getting louder, "Of course," he forced himself to pull back, scooting away from her slightly. Hoping being a couple inches away from her would break the spell she put on him. He sighed and closed his eyes, trying to collect himself.
"Thora," He looked at his feet, "I think of you then more of a friend," What the hell am I doing?! This will end badly! "Ever since I met you... There is something inside me that... wants you." he looked back up into her eyes, "It pulls me to you. I have no idea if you feel the same for me, but... I don't know," he glared back down to his feet, "I guess I just wanted you to know that..." he winced, waiting for rejection.

"Yeah," Elam said quietly at first. "Yeah, yeah. Of course."
He pulled back and she did the same in response. The heat still stayed in her face - this time out of embarrassment more so than the feelings she was beginning to feel for the male. It was a stupidly forward move she thought. I guess I look like a creep or something. Her chocolate eyes dropped from his gaze. The female stared at a small crack in the pavement, just barely brought into existence with the moon's light. She heard a sigh and looked up, but did not move her head.
"Thora," Elam was looking at his paws. "I think of you as more than a friend... Ever since I met you... There is something inside me that... wants you." He met her gaze for a second. "It pulls me to you. I have no idea if you feel the same for me but,... I don't know." The male's eyes dropped again, "I guess I just wanted you to know."
Not what she'd expected. Thora's ears stood erect on her head. A declaration of his feelings was about the farthest thing from a rejection. This is the part where I say 'I love you, too, right? Where I tell him how I feel? What do I feel? The female's ears pulled back in thought. What was love? True love? The only "love" the elk hound had ever felt was the love of her family, which certainly did not make her heart flutter and stomach turn in the most glorious way possible, and the love her owner felt for his prize dog - which wasn't love at all. Was this how it felt: the giddy jitters whenever they got near, your heart throwing itself against your ribs as they stared into your eyes, the need to hear their voice and drink their scent?
"I don't know that I feel the same way - " Thora stopped abruptly. "I mean! I-I don't think I can. I don't know if what I feel right now is the same thing you feel - I certainly haven't felt it before, ever - but, I..." She dropped her head and started at her shuffling paws. When she spoke again, it was only in the quietest whisper. "I don't think I know how to love. And I don't want to hurt you.

"I don't know that I feel the same way - " Elam dropped his head, See!? his brain snapped at his heart, I knew it! She would never hav- "I mean! I-I don't think I can. I don't know if what I feel right now is the same thing you feel - I certainly haven't felt it before, ever - but, I..." she stared down at her fidgeting paws, "I don't think I know how to love. And I don't want to hurt you." she said in a barely audible whisper. He winced, Like how she's hurting me now?
Elam sighed, "Figured as much," he looked up at the sky, staring at the fading stars, "It's confusing, ain't it? I haven't felt this way about anyone," he said cooley, "But hey. They say rejection is good sometimes," The male said with a shrug. He wanted to be close to her now, to be in the same position they were in moments ago. But he crushed that.

Elam sighed, "Figured as much," he looked up at the sky, "It's confusing, ain't it? I haven't felt this way about anyone... But hey. They say rejection is good sometimes."
Thora winced. Had she really gone from love-struck to heart broken in a matter of minutes? Her heart sunk down to her rump, giving only occasional, feeble jolts to keep her alive. The elk hound traced the faint crack with a claw, pulling together her scrambled, hurt thoughts into speech.
"I understand... I guess. You deserve better. I mean, you're really handsome and nice and sweet... And me? My personality isn't appealing in the least and I'm far from pretty. I can understand if," the female took a deep breath to steady her voice "if you don't like me anymore."
She turned away from him now, embarrassed by her rambling and quite expecting the male to make some curt reply and stalk away. It was true, wasn't it? She had never considered herself handsome in any way. The female's coat was only a dull mixture of blacks and grays! More importantly, perhaps, was her lack of a decent personality. Thora was hard and mean - not of her own will, but irreversible none the less. She chided herself for being surprised at his actions. Just a few seconds ago, Thora would have given anything to be closer, now she wished to curl up in her den and wait until they both forgot this ever happened.

She turned her back to him, her head hung, staring at her paws. He just sat there, mouth open like an idiot. "Thora..." he breathed. Maybe her calling him nice, sweet, and handsome stunned him. No, it was calling herself ugly. In his eyes, them being together would be like beauty and the beast; Her as the pretty princess. Him, the beast that no one would love. But somehow, they worked out. What did he say that made her like this? He traced back his steps. But hey. They say rejection is good sometimes. His ears shot up.
"Thora! I didn't mean it like that. I am saying I shouldn't spill my feelings like that... Rejection would just teach me something," he got up and padded to her slowly "and don't say your not beautiful. Because you are," he sat back on his haunches in font of her, "and your personality... well, I have to agree it's no-" he stopped himself, that wouldn't help, "Nevermind. I am saying, you have had a tough life. No way a dog who's gone through that would be a little ball of sunshine," his memory flashed back to when she was telling him of her past. He shivered when he pictured a human with a steel pipe in his hands, "and plus," he got closer to her, no uneasiness or fire, like it was almost natural. He lowered his head to connect their noses again. He nudged her head up so their gazes met, "I kinda... like it. Your personality is one of the things I.... love about you," he gave a small chuckle.

The silence that followed was neither hurtful nor comforting. The elkhound kneaded the pavement with her paws, still waiting for a curt, brash response.
"Thora! I didn't mean it like that. I am saying I shouldn't spill my feelings like that... Rejection would just teach me something," she heard his pawsteps as he padded around to face her again. "And don't say you're not beautiful, because you are." The female blushed profusely at the compliment and a faint smile appeared on her muzzle. Elam sat back on his haunches in font of her.
"And your personality... well, I have to agree it's no-" he stopped. "Never mind. I'm saying, you've had a tough life. No way a dog who's gone through that would be a little ball of sunshine, and plus," He pushed her muzzle up so their gazes met. "I kinda... like it. Your personality is one of the things I... love about you," he gave a small chuckle.
Through some unknown instinct, she lurched forward and pressed her cheek against his. His warm, musky scent made her tail wave back and forth with faint swish noises. A happy smile painted itself on her maw. "I love you, Elam."
An inkling of a thought scuttled across her mind like a lizard across a hot rock. She trapped its tail beneath her paw and studied it, smacking her lips in pleasure. Thora reached up and nipped at the male's ear, giving it a playful tug. She scooted back and dropped into play-crouch, wiggling her rump. A low, suggestive growl seethed out from her toothy smirk. The female's eyes sparkled in question.

Suddenly, Thora lurched forward, connecting her cheek to his. The mixture of the warmth rolling off her body and her flowery, sweet aroma made him feel comfortable, like he was back home with his humans, sleeping on his giant pillow. "I love you, Elam." The male closed his eyes and gave a warm smile.
There was a dull pain on his ear that surprised him. Thora jumped back, and got into a crouch. Not like she would do if she wanted to fight, but the kind you see young pups do when they were playing. Her rump wiggling in the air. Elam tilted his head in confusion, ...What the hell is she doing? A low, suggestive growl came from her chest through a smirk. He caught was she was doing. His muzzle got slightly warmer, and let out a low laugh.
Elam lowered down to a crouch too, his straight tail swishing slowly behind him. He dug his claws into the ground. His legs sprang, sending him closer to Thora. He landed in front of her, their paws almost touching. She rose to her back legs, towering over him. Elam carefully pounced again into her stomach, trying not to hurt her in anyway. They landed with a thud in a nearby patch of grass. He touched his muzzle to hers. "I love you, Thora,"

Elam dropped down to a crouch too, his straight tail swishing slowly behind him. He uttered a low laugh to match her growl. The male sprang forward, their paws almost touching. Thora reared back, her mouth open in a wide grin. The male reared up as well and overpowered her.
The female landed on her back with a soft fwump in a patch of soft grass with Elam splayed out on her stomach. They touched muzzles together again. It was funny how such a simple gesture had such a profound feeling and emotion behind it. "I love you, Thora." His breath tickled the short fur around her nose.
She licked the side of his muzzle in response. "I didn't know racy like this, big boy; taking advantage of poor ol' me." She raised her brows and let out a hum of laughter, obviously referring to the fact that he was splayed out on top of her. "You wouldn't do anything... bad now, would you?"
